Sue Barnes
My
work is primarily drawn from the South Downs, where
you can see the marks of use that we leave on the
landscape: paths, tracks, bridges - the signs that
we have been this way before. Places build up maps
of their own history. Then there are the places we
avoid, the dark wood, the gaping doorway.
I
like to exploit the physical properties of paint by
pouring or dribbling paint onto the canvas, I rub
back and layer, looking for those marks that seem
to grow naturally out of the work. I also explore
subjects using photography and printmaking.
I
gained my degree in painting from Brighton University,
graduating in 2003 and have taken part in shows in
London as well as East and West Sussex.
