Troy Ohlson
Wildscape
Wildlife Artist of the Year 2004 Prize Winner
Echoes
of the art and exotic creatures of my travels to West
Africa and the Bahamas enrich my work. The wildlife,
skies and landscapes of Sussex and my tiny Brighton
garden inspire and enchant me. Time spent swimming
and diving in the waters of Paradise Island and Nassau
have made fish one of my favourite subjects.
Pattern
fascinates me. I enjoy contrasting bold shapes with
fine and intricate detail to create texture and movement.
Most of my pieces can be viewed as both abstract and
figurative - this duality is fundamental to my practice.
I
blur the boundaries between painting and printmaking,
mixing media within each image, often adding collage,
watercolour, acrylic, and pen & ink to my paintings,
etchings and linocuts, increasingly incorporating
emerging technology and digital techniques. The influence
of each medium plays an important part in determining
the character of the final piece.
My
etchings are created using nitric acid to burn the
images into metal plates which I then hand ink and
print individually on a traditional etching press.
I experiment with colour and techniques within each
etching Edition.
